RefMyGame was the idea of Dante and Angie Sabatucci who both have an extensive background in youth sports coaching and scheduling.  The idea came in 2021 when it became obvious that there should be an app designed for the scheduling and paying of game officials, similar to ride sharing apps.  For many years, Angie was responsible for scheduling game officials for the church where she ran women’s sports ministry.  She was responsible for scheduling officials for basketball, volleyball, softball and many other sports.  The process was inefficient and presented challenges in communications, speedy payment and took time away from the ministry. In addition, there were times when last minute changes or scheduling miscommunications would cause games to be without game officials.  Anyone who has run sports leagues or teams has experienced the same challenges.

Dante runs a travel baseball organization with more than ten teams where the coaches are responsible for scheduling their own game officials for league games.  He works with assigners who are presented with the challenge of scheduling baseball games with constant changes due to weather, reschedules and time changes.  The coaches often times don’t know who the game official is or how to communicate with them if there is a change and the game official has no way of communicating traffic delays, delays from a previous game or checking on the weather status in another part of town.  Also, game officials don’t like to wait weeks and sometimes months for payment for their games.  Dante also saw the need for tournament directors to use some technology to schedule and pay game officials who may be going to various venues making it difficult to communicate with and pay them.

The goal was to create an app that did not require an expensive subscription and that is free for game officials and assigners to use.  The app is designed to be monetized (similar to ride sharing apps) through the payment transaction.  Dante and Angie contacted Mauka Technology who has an extensive background in app development.  Together they developed a scheduling process that will work in all sorts of situations.  They wanted coaches and officials to continue to be able to use assigners as they always have but for coaches to be able to schedule directly with game officials when it makes sense.  They also wanted to create a method for coaches/assigners to be able to put out last minute officiating needs and for officials to be able to find last minute games.  Communication among all parties was one of the key priorities in the development of RefMyGame.  RefMyGame was launched in April, 2022 with the objective to begin using the app commercially but also to elicit feedback from the users about functionality gaps.  RefMyGame is currently available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.  It also works with the same functionality on a browser on any device.
